Perceptions of Dentistry
How do you know if the dentist that you are going to is competent? What criteria do you use? As a dentist, I know how to tell if a fellow dentist is good, bad, or ugly, but how do you tell?
As I was saying in a comment to my last post, most people today have a lot of knowledge of medicine from shows like ER, CSI, and House MD and from networks like Discovery and The Learning Channel. We are constantly hearing new things about medicine because they are in our newspapers and magazines. I bet if I asked you to define terms like cardiac defibrillation, sputum, pulmonary embolism, and neurovascular accident, you may not know all of the technical specifics, but you’d give a working definition. But what about the dental term TMJ? Most people think that TMJ is a problem with their jaw joints, but did you know that TMJ stands for TemporoMandibular Joint and refers to the joint itself, and that to say “I have TMJ” is akin to saying ”I have arm” or “I have stomach”? Can you start to see the imbalance between medical knowledge and dental knowledge among the general public?
So, my questions stand. How do you choose a dentist and what criteria do you use to trust him with your mouth? Please leave specific comments and most importantly, encourage your friends and relatives to visit the site and do the same!
UPDATE: I realize that insurance is an issue when finding a dentist. What I am interested in is what keeps you at the dentist, not necessarily what brought you to him (though feel free to mention both reasons).

How do I choose my dentist? Depends on whether he’s covered by my insurance company.
Now actually visiting the dentist…that’s different.
heh visiting my dentist. To be honest I haven’t been in a while. However I would probably choose based on how comfortable he/she made me feel in the chair and on how well he explained what he was doing and why it was necessary. I do that for any physician actually. I’m the type who prefers to be educated concerning my health not simply told what to do. If you going to be doing something as intimate as working on my mouth then I want to know details and in a language I can understand.
Jeremy, you bring up a good point which ties in nicely to my post; why haven’t you been lately?
Sean, I forgot to add something: normally I try to visit the dentist every six months, but for some reason my dentist hasn’t been keeping track of me for the past, ohhh, two years. So I haven’t seen him for awhile now. And yes, I could probably get off my butt and schedule an appointment with him, but I’m a top procrastinator. At least, that’s my excuse…
We have two dentists covered by our insurance. Both are about 45 minutes away. I picked the one that was other people recommended because that dentist was able to make them feel comfortable. My kids like going as well. Unfortunately, I don’t enjoy going to the dentist no matter who it is. I am okay with people sticking needles in my skin, but mess with my teeth and I tense up. I don’t like the feeling of my teeth vibrating.
Oops. That is me, Julie, not Jeremy with this last one. I’m using his desktop and wasn’t paying attention.
I haven’t been in a while cause of two reasons actually. One is simply not making the time. The other and less easy to fix one is money. I haven’t had insurance that covered it for a lot of my adult life. And an appointment ain’t cheap. Which brings up another question. Why doesn’t more health insurance cover dental?
I have found such a great dentitst that dental insurance isn’t even a concern anymore. Why is he so great? Personality and, what I percieve as, competence. He’s very professional (in a customer service way. I mean as a dentist too, but he’s really nice), very fast (I never wait for an appointment. Never.), and he’s done quite a bit of work in my mouth (two crowns, multiple fillings). I feel very comfortable with him.
But to be honest, I just like going to the dentist. THere is a certain thrill of being in the hands of professionals.
I’ve had a fair amount of dental work in the last couple years, I like my dentist because he’s compentent and fast. He was reccomended by a coworker who knew him outside the office. They’ve been professional.
I’m with Jeremy also, I like to be educated while I’m there. I don’t mind a Dr. or Dentist explaining the technical terms and what he’s doing. I prefer it most of the time.
